Initial Script Ideas and Research

Start – I want to open my documentary with a blank screen and the sound of a news reporter. Then the screen fades from black to the news report on screen. Then I will use facts and figures and give an opening to cyberbullying with a narrative. While I speak, there will be cutaways of computer screens, keyboards and mobile phones. I will say which I will be aiming to put across to the audience throughout the documentary.

Middle – I will use a real life story in this middle section – but I will change the names. I will create a mini-reconstruction to show what it is like. The real life story will be based on victim Megan Meiers. She was the victim of cyberbullying and sadly took her own life in 2006. Although this took place in the United States, I want to show how serious cyberbullying is all over the world and that this kind of harassment shouldn’t be taking place. Megan was only 13 years old when she committed suicide because her online boyfriend turned nasty. Later on, they found out this ‘boyfriend’ was Megan’s neighbour, trying to find out if Megan was ‘bitching’ about her daughter. During this horrific story I will show cutaways of Megan but blur out the face.

End – I will discuss the current situation worldwide and in the UK. I will post my opinion of cyberbullying and summarise.

Facts and Figures
- 42% of children have been cyberbullied
- 21% have received a threatening e-mail
- 15% of parents knew what cyberbullying is (85% don’t know)
- Girls are more likely to be victimised
- 81% of cyberbullies do it because it’s “funny”.
- 41 percent of victims do not tell anyone in their off-screen lives about their abuse, but 38 percent did tell an online friend.

Why do people cyberbully – poll from 2008
- 22% motivated by revenge
- 18.7% said the victim deserved it
- 10.6 % said they did it for fun
- 3.9% hated the victim
- 3.5% pressured by peers
- 2.8% retaliated against a bully
- 2.5% venting anger
- 5.7% other reasons

The charity BeatBullying has reported that 44% of teenage suicide cases stem from bullying incidents. In just eight years, 2100 children killed themselves, with almost half of these tragedies occurring because of tormenting from other kids. Many victims were pursued by bullies online, via email or on social networking sites.

Specification and My Intial Ideas

I will be producing a five minute documentary looking at the serious side of Cyberbullying and some real life stories. It’ll explore the realistic facts of cyberbullying and how parents and victims can receive help. I will also explore the story of a tragic suicide which was committed around the event of cyberbullying in United States. My main focus is to make my target audience – adults of teenagers and children with laptops/PC – aware of the dangers of cyberbullying and identity theft. For my documentary, I will interview victims and possible victims. I will interview the naive children who have just started high school and the students who are half way through their studies. I will also mock up a scene where I will interview the Executive of a social networking site –Facebook or Bebo. I will use realistic facts and figures from stories in the news and results from national questionnaires and surveys. I will have to research the subject and watch relevant documentaries which will support my documentary.

I will include principal positions and perspectives – such as if people are for or against my subject. I would like to think that everyone is against cyberbullying. People should be against cyberbullying as it is a painful experience for any victims and it can cause tragic deaths and depression issues. There are many campaigns for bullying and cyberbullying such as DirectGov and STOP Cyberbullying.

List of possible cutaways

List of possible speakers/interviews

Pre-Production Ideas

Pre-Production Planning

What is your subject/What do you want to say?
I have chosen Cyberbullying as my subject. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been bullied and up until recently it has calmed down. I know how it feels to be bullied. Having a younger brother also lets me know that his generation also get bullied. To me, bullying is a serious issue and shouldn’t be happening. Bullying online seems to be becoming more popular and after I have heard about serious cases of Cyberbullying where the victim has committed suicide has made me realize that people need to be more aware of what their children do on the laptop or PC.

Who is your audience/target market?
My documentary will be mainly aimed at adults. I don’t think they realize how much cyberbullying takes part and effects the children and teenagers affected. A documentary like this will inform them. Also, the victims of cyberbullying can see what help is available.

Where do you want to film?
I will mainly film at home, library and various other places around school (playground). I will film at home either on a computer and use cutaways such as computer keyboards and screens. At school, I will film school children and look for obvious divisions. Also, to see the way children act in real life and interview some about their ‘online identities’. In the library, I can use the computers there and use the room too film interviews.

What previous documentaries/current media inspires you?
As childish as this will sound, I’m a big fan of media icon Demi Lovato. She has a strong belief about bullying as she was bullied herself as a kid. She has teamed up with an organisation called Pacer. I think the work she does and the way she inspires teenagers and children is wonderful. So, that’s one of my main inspirations. Also, as I mentioned before, I was bullied all throughout Middle School and High School – not so much online, but either way, it isn’t the nicest feeling. I know how it feels and I believe no one else should feel like that at all. Kids need to be able to voice their own opinions and dress the way they want and listen to the music they’re into without other people pressurising them about it.

What expertise do you currently have?
I have excellent ICT skills. I enjoy working with computers and technology – even if it fails me all the time. I also have the expertise from not only myself, but my peers. With their help I’ll be able to produce a well-performed documentary. Also, having resources like the school grounds and computers will help me. My main expertise aren’t even mine, haha!

A2 Media

Oh, it's lovely to be back to Sixth Form. So, for A2 Media we're creating documentaries and also doing some print work - which I'm excited about. I've been working on a hard-copy of my portfolio all afternoon. I have designed a PowerPoint which I can present and I also have all my research too.

I also thought, since it's a new academic year, I'd change my layout. So now I have a fancy new theme. Anyway! I better get back to doing this portfolio. Script next!

xo.

Evaluation

Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? For this task, I had to research other films that already existed and see how well they did within the film industry. The two I looked at weren’t well known, however, Cujo is originally a book.

How does your media product represent particular social groups? My film doesn’t have a specific social group it is related to. What we have created is only two minutes and involves a single human character. If this were to continue on, I would say that the social groups would be difficult to choose from.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Companies that produced such things as the Saw films include Entertainment Film Distributors and Lions Gate Films. Entertainment Film Distributors (EFD) distributes other horror films which mean that they could be interested. They have distributed other horror films such as Halloween II and The Final Destination.

Who would be the audience for your media product? I would say my film would be aimed at people who enjoy horror films – mainly teenagers. However, the product would be aimed at a wide range of people. I would certify my film as a 15.

How did you attract/address your audience? For my audience feedback, I put my final product onto Facebook and YouTube and allowed friends, family and others. I attracted my audience by leaving a brief outline and let that draw them in.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product? I have learnt that a lot of work goes into creating a film and that it isn’t just as easy as filming. The editing was difficult and took its time, along-side finding copyright audio. The screenplay and shooting script go into great depth about how the film will be, however, they never turn out exactly how you planned for it to be.

Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? The preliminary task allowed us all to find out how it works and gave us a push. The preliminary task was our taster on how this main task would be. For this preliminary, we were able to use our imagination and create anything we wanted to, and therefore it would be easier to think for our main task.
